Volunteering for Eagle Boards of Review
We are always looking for volunteers to serve on
Eagle Boards of Review and Eagle Project Reviews.
There are a few things you need to know before
considering participating on an official board of
the district advancement committee.
Purpose of an Eagle Board of Review
The Eagle Scout Board of Review is structured to
determine whether the Eagle Scout candidate has
exemplified the ideals of scouting and ascertain
whether he will continue to exhibit the high
standards deserving of the Eagle Scout rank. The
Board of Review is not an examination. The members
should not retest the Eagle Scout candidate on any
topics. The Board should attempt to review the
Eagle Scout candidate’s experiences is Scouting as
well as his attitude and understanding of the
ideals of Scouting.
Who Conducts the Board of Review?
In almost every case, the board of review is conducted
by at least three members of the troop committee.
The Scoutmaster and assistant Scoutmasters are not
members of the board of review. The Scoutmaster can
introduce the Scout to the board members and may
sit with him to hear the board's decision, but
should not be present during the actual board of
review. Obviously, the Scout's parent should not
serve on his board of review panel.
All Eagle Board of Review must constitute
at least three and not more than six members who
are all 21 years of age or older.
It is important to have quality individuals
serving on the Board of Review to ensure the Eagle
Scout candidate has a quality
experience with his Eagle Scout Board. The members
do not have to be registered Scouters,
but they must have an understanding of the
importance and purpose of the Eagle Scout
Board of Review, the BSA program, and the
principles of the BSA.
The Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmasters from the
Eagle Scout candidate’s unit may not
serve on the Board of Review. Parents,
guardians, or relatives of the Eagle Scout
candidate may not serve on the Board
of Review.
